Extinguishing systems for the storage of hazardous substances

The fire protection of the storage for hazardous substances is a major challenge for companies and the fire service. A fire can start from a single spark due to the highly flammable substances. And due to the low flash point of many hazardous substances, rapid and fierce fire development is a major risk. In principle, a solid and approved storage concept is required for the storage of hazardous substances. But even then there is still a fire risk due to, for example, fire spread, fire penetration, spontaneous combustion and human inattention.

Our aerosol extinguishing systems are extremely suitable for further limiting the fire risk and especially the major consequences of a fire. Our systems actively contribute to limiting the risk to humans, animals, the environment and your business operations. Our unique systems are highly effective and require no piping or external storage. Due to the chemical reaction of our aerosol with the components of the fire, both free radicals and heat are extracted without leaving toxic fire extinguishing water. So a fire extinguisher is not necessary. Our extinguishing agents are 100% environmentally friendly and not dangerous for people.

The benefits of Aerosol for protecting hazardous substances

Extinguishing systems for hazardous substances

When storing hazardous substances, the choice of extinguishing technology is crucial. Agreements will be made in a European context about, for example, water-polluting substances, and stricter rules will apply to the dimensioning of extinguishing water collection for hazardous substances. For the time being, it is assumed that 6 m³ of extinguishing water collection is required for a fire area of up to 25 m². This results in high additional costs. The use of aerosol extinguishing systems, on the other hand, is an optimal alternative here, since the extinguishing water collection is completely eliminated.

Fire Protection PGS 15

PGS 15 is the guideline for the storage of packaged hazardous substances in the Netherlands. The Dutch PGS 15 provides guidelines on the manner of storage of packaged hazardous substances and on all relevant conditions for fire protection, occupational safety and environmental safety.

With regard to fire protection, the PGS 15 guideline states that spaces where hazardous substances are stored must at least meet a WBDBO (resistance to fire penetration and fire spread) of 60 minutes. This also applies to components such as doors, pipes and ventilation openings.

The PGS 15 stipulates that an extinguishing system is necessary for certain volumes of hazardous substances. But it is also advisable to install an aerosol extinguishing system for small volumes:

  • Limits fire damage
  • Protects stock of hazardous substances
  • Prevents renovation costs
  • Prevents environmental damage

There is really no reason not to protect your hazardous materials storage. Whether it's protecting a single cabinet for hazardous substances or an entire room. Contact us for more information or request a quote without obligation.

It is important for the correct and approved use of our extinguishing systems for PGS 15 rooms that it is included in the basic principle document as laid down in the PGS 15 guideline. The basic principle document (UPD) is a document that:

  • Forms the basis for the design, implementation, management and inspection of the established fire control and fire extinguishing system (VBB system). To this end, the UPS contains all the information necessary to be able to assess whether a VBB system is effective.
  • Provides transparency about the argumentation for the choice of the VBB system.
  • The standards on the basis of which the VBB system is designed, installed and managed.
  • Deviations from the applied standards, whether or not mentioned in the PGS guidelines, in the design and implementation of the VBB system, have been recorded.

At a minimum, the company for the storage of hazardous substances, the Inspection A institution, the safety region as an advisor to the competent authority and the competent authority are involved in the establishment of the UPS.

There are several processes that play a role in the UPD. Firstly, there is the process of establishing the UPD. In addition, there is the annually recurring process of assessing the VBB system according to the approved UPD. Finally, the UPD is assessed every five years for topicality and tested against the state of the art.

Due to the relative simplicity and reliability of our systems, in combination with a long service life and low maintenance effort, there are fewer restrictions on meeting the requirements of the UPS than with other extinguishing systems.

Advantages of our Aerosol Fire Suppression Systems

How does aerosol work as extinguishing agent?

The fire is recognized by means of a fire detector, electrical ignition or fully autonomous analog ignition. Our Aerosol generator generates the aerosol and an endothermic reaction converts potassium hydrogen carbonate into potassium carbonate, chemically removing oxidizing substances from the combustion process and extinguishing the fire. At the same time, additional heat is extracted from the combustion process. For example, the fire is extinguished in two ways and the chance of re-ignition is considerably reduced. During the extinguishing process, no oxygen is extracted and the residual potassium carbonate product is environmentally friendly and easy to clean up.
